Casting Rods For Drift Fishing

I fish mostly large rivers for steelhead. My father has a certified X 86 MC I like the feel of this rod for drift fishing. It has a relatively stiff tip that allows an excellent feeling during drifts. It doesn't give the soft gushy feeling at the tip that I get with medium or slow action rods. I like the action on it a lot! But it is not adequate length for the rivers that I fish. I would like to get either X 10 MC or the X 10 MTC. I was interested in the MTC because it has slightly more backbone, and is rated for lures down to 1/4 ounce rather than 3/8. I often toss small spinners as a second tactic, so the lure rating on this rod is more desirable to me. However I am more concerned that the rod action feels similar to my father's rod than I am about the small reduction in lure weight. I am just wondering how closely the X 10 MTC 's action compares to that of the X 86 MC for drift fishing. I was also curious what mag/med means compared to simply mag? Thanks.

The X 10 MC will handle 1/4

The X 10 MC will handle 1/4 presentations just fine. I've never figured out the discrepancy between the ratings on the MC and the MTC. Bill Herzog designed the X 10 rods and uses the X 10 MC almost exclusively. The MTC is for considerably larger presentations, river current, or fish size. I own both and fish the MTC much less only for B run 20 lb+ Washington peninsula or Canadian steelhead or larger sized salmon fishing.
Generally the X 10 MC is a longer X 86 MC. Feels different due to the length a tip weight difference.

No one knows as much as all of us.
