Smallmouth Rod Selection

I have currently started to create a Smallmouth arsenal since my Largemouth set ups are all dialed in. I Have 2 Spinning rods, XMG 50 EXS 722 Drop Shot Special and a very rare rod from a slim collection. There were only a handful of these rods made i believe, IRFA 702S. Besides that I need some casting set ups.
Any Advice???!!!

Thanks, Casey

Flipn 'N' Pitchn is always the solution.

I fish river smallies. The best rod I have used is the XMG 50 EXS 661. The feal is super and the power is perfect. It deals with a 1/8 jig and grub great. Could not go wrong with this one.

Your 722 will work well with

Your 722 will work well with finesse setups. As Dan said any of the EXS or XS661 is just a fantastic smallie and walleye rod that you'll find reasons to use on LM bass and saltwater also. Very versatile.
Your Indian River saltwater 2 power isn't very rare and is used in inland waters south east coast a lot.
Lamiglas has a rods out that has the same characteristics as their old S glass 7 ft SSP 4 power blanks, soft tips with good backbone. You definitely would want one of those. Wish I could remember the number, sorry. They can help you there. This advise column doesn't get the support from the factory guys that a phone call or email will get.
Similar rods you may have tried before would have been the St Croix 68MXF, the All Star 813 Tops and Tails, the Rogue 2 piece 5 power popping rods.
A 6 1/2 to 7 ft medium power fast action casting rod, same length and power moderate action rod for lipless cranks and your set up for most smallie situations.

No one knows as much as all of us.

Casey The new Excel series

Casey

The new Excel series spinning rods cover the whole range. The XL702S for drop shot, the XL703S for grubs and tubes and the XL704S for hula grubs and light Carolina rigged reapers and lizards. I have mine matched with Pflueger Presidents. The XL703C for Jerkbaits and top water and the XL704C for spinnerbaits. The 703C will double as a crankin rod although the XCC725 is the deal for deep crank baits. I just managed to find the new Excel glass 705 but haven't fished it yet. The whole series is a winner. I'm still looking for a Tennesee handle 701 if anyone has one they might part with.
