I just found a good deal on a 8'6" triflex and would like to match a van staal to it. I will fishing mostly Florida east central. Maybe more importantly, what would be the optimum weight reel for this rod.

I too have a 8' 6 " triflex - It can handle up to medium reels....one heck of a strong rod !
I have used three reels on it including a VS 250. The 250 seemed a little heavy, but the triflex has a great backbone for handling fish.
I have used it on party boats and was (very against Lami advice) able to use a BtRunner 4500 with 20 pound line and swing 5 to 8 pound barracuda over the rail when the crew was busy ... it throws 1 to 3 oz lures very well.
I bought it to use for 10 to 20 pound albacore and will probably use a the VS or a Saragosa with a short 25 pound FL on spectra
BUT,
.... If your casting a lot, you might get a lighter reel...
Enjoy !
