When drift fishing for Chinook, I have always fished rods on the lighter side so that I get maximum sensitivity on fairly light line (12-15 lb test). However, there are times where I feel vastly "undergunned" as a result. I continue to fish light setups in situations where I have room to fight the fish and the flow is fairly tame (currently fishing an XMG EXC92M), but I am in need of a stick with the same level of sensitivity but with more backbone. I need to be able to put some serious pressure on chrome bright Kings up to 40 lbs on 20 lb test in heavy flows.
Any ideas on a powerful drift fishing rod for Kings that has the SENSITIVITY of the XMG series around 9' ? Thx.

Try that 8 ft 9 in model you see in the catalog.

Assume you are referring to the XMG EXC89MT? Think that is powerful enough? Don't need to step up to a Kenai Special do I? Thx. NCD.

The Kenai Special is an excellent rod and one of my favorites, but I wouldn't classify it as any more powerful than the EXC89MT. The Kenai Special is a more moderate action rod that does just about anything well, including down rigger duty. That said I wouldn't take it to the Kenai on big Kings. Silvers, sockeye, etc. you bet. Lamiglas makes heavier powered rods for that, but if you don't have the heavy current, monster fish, huge crowds in very close proximity, I'm not sure you need a huge powered rod for any salmon.
