I am interested in building a EXS96L blank as a casting rod. Does anyone have any experience with this? This would be a boat rod used solely for side drifting. I don't like spinning reels and will not use one. No one makes a factory rod this light in a casting rod, save for the 1082, but I would rather fish a Lami. I have spent quite awhile comparing the flex and power of the 1082 versus the EXS96L, and it feels to me like the Lami is comparable in power. It stands to reason that you wouldn't have any more problems with breakage or casting power with the EXS96L than you would the 1082. On the other hand, there is a need out there for a light line casting rod in the 6-10lb range, and Lami obviously would rather not put some thing into that niche. What gives? What is the reason for not making this blank in a casting configuration? Seems like it could fit the bill nicely. Does anyone have first hand experience with this? Thanks

Not that many people use casting reels with that weight line blank. The reels, in general, from years ago didn't work very well with light lines and presentations. Rods were built for some time on them, but not many people bought the necessary reels to go with them, for instance, the old Shimano Bantam 100 EX ultralight reel, the old graphite Shimano Bantam 101 with the V spool also worked well. Lamiglas just recently quit making a 10 ft Certified Pro 6 to 10 casting rod.
I've had casting rods built on the 4 to 8 and 6 to 10 for over 20 years, just don't see many others using them on the water. They are excellent well balanced fishing rods compared to the spinning versions.

I posted something similar to this a few months back..I would also like to see Lami produce a casting version of the EXS 96L. THe response I got from Lami rep was that they would discuss at a future R&D mtg, and that it had not been considered thus far b/c light line casting rods did not sell as well. The 1082 by that "other" company sells well, and is considered by many to be the best light line summer run rod made. I would love to see an XMG version to go against the 1082. These days, with the low-pro baitcasters weighing in at 7 to 9 ounces on average, they would be a GREAT match with a 6-10 XMG. I would grab one in a hurry if they made them.
If you make one up custom, let us know how it turns out. I would prefer a factory rod from Lami, though.

I guess the question I have is why light line casting rods don't sell? Is it because most anglers are bank bound and need a heavier rod for decent drifts? Which wouldn't explain the popularity of light line spinning rods. Casting performance? Seems to me the 6-10 has enough backbone to cast the weights that most boat side drifters would be using, even with a baitcaster. Breakage? More leverage with a casting rod?
Like I said above, any reel from the $29.95 specials on up will work with a spinning version, so they have a long time cultural following.
The casting reels used for steelhead fishing over the years were the larger line capacity versions. Still you see more casting reels in the Abu 5000/5500 or shimano 200/201 size used and few 100 size reels or smaller. These reels till recently just didn't deliver line line/lure performance. There have always been good exceptions, but the average steelhead angler isn't near as educated about his gear as many other anglers of other species.

If they made one I would buy one. I dont understand why they wouldnt make a specialty rod like that they have the blanks to do so. slap on a EXC 92 M handle and around 15 guides including the tip little epoxy and yah good to go. I would pay a few extra bucks to be able to get a specialty rod :):)
When your trying to make money from the general public, you have to get the rod bought by the distributor, the store and than the customer. Everyone before the customer has to make some money before the customer has a rod they are pleased with, specialty rods wouldn't do that for them in salmon and steelhead rods.
Any of the custom builders around can do it, set up exactly as you want it.

Angler's Workshop right next to Lamiglas factory has everything you need to make the casting version of the EXS96L. The price to make the custom rod would be pretty much the same price range as a factory rod, depend of the components you use to built your rod that will effect the price. I had my built, but i haven't get to use it yet. Very light rod with faster action, felt great in my hand. If you want one, go to Anglerworkshop, and talk to Dave or Earl they would be able to help you out.

I have sold a couple of blanks to guys recently who have built the 96L into a drift rod. Both have been very pleased with its performance. Both however were using it fishing summer steelhead with low flows. Interested to see how they react to winter fishing conditions.
