I finally picked up an XCF 904 for this exact same purpose, and it performed flawlessly this past weekend out at B10. I was using a delta diver, big al's fish flash and herring/brads super cut plug lure. I have no complaints. The softer tip gave some give on the coho's short strikes, but the stout back bone was plenty to allow me to reel those bad boys in without too much hassle. The length was also a nice benefit which allowed the fish to get into the net a lot easier.
I spoke with a Lamiglas rep before I bought the rod, and he stated that trolling herring on a diver is exactly what the XCF 904 was built for.
