I recently got a XMG 50 9 wt. blank and was so impressed with its quality that now I want a small ultra-light fly rod to go with it. You know how it goes...........ahem. Anyhow I'm kinda confused at the the listed blank weights of this series. You have the 7'6" 4wt as going 3/4 of a ounce! Thats the same as your 7' 3wt. which has a much smaller butt diameter. The blank I was most interested in however was the 6'6" 3 wt. which is listed as only weighing 1/2 ounce. I have always wanted to build a "one ounce" flyrod and this looks like a excellent blank to start with. How accurate are these weights? Could ya'll <~~~~(I'm from Kentucky) actually weigh some of these blanks there at your factory and give me some reassurances on the weights of these 3 blanks? Are these blanks considered "fast"? With those butt diameters I would think so but wanted to ask. Thanks! Billy Russell

These are the actual weights.
ET783 = .5oz
ET843= .7oz
ET904= 1.0oz.
I would say they are not super fast but definitely not slow. They are the best feeling light fly rods I have held. They are a bit on the delicate side and do not like to be hit on things but short of that they are almost perfect.

Butt diameter has no bearing on rod weight. In fact if you built to rods out of the same amount of graphite, the large diameter,thin wall design would be a stiffer, more powerful blank. The thinner,thicker wall blank would be more durable to abuse and being knocked about.
The thicker walled blank would also have far less difference in characeristics if you added more material. except for a disproportional drop in the power to weight ratio. I much prefer a more tender, faster reacting, light, but powerful blank over a thin, thick wall, less powerful blank. You may see the compromises we must make from another point of view and we'd both be right, as there really is no wrong.
