A finished prototype SS10MHS of mine recently snapped at the ferrule on the bottom section when casting 5 oz and a small strip of mullet filet on Hatteras Island.
I would like help selecting a replacement blank or finished rod to use for fishing heavy lures and bait. I will most often be fishing NJ and DE, but will also fish Hatteras once a year or so. Ideally, I would prefer a custom rod wrapped with low rider guides. I would like to use the rod to fish both conventional and spinning, with distance casting being a priority. For conventional, I would use an Avet SX and for spinning, I would us a Van Staal 250 or Daiwa Emblem Pro. The SS10MHS felt very tip heavy to me and wonder if this may have contributed to the break. I don't foresee casting over 6 oz very often, if at all. Should I select a blank or rod rated 2 - 6 oz. or 4 - 8 oz. Thanks is advance for your help.

You may want to look at our new detachable handle SS rods. They feel like a one piece as the tip section is 7 or 8 feet depending on if you get the 10' or 11'. And they are not as tip heavy as the normal 2 pc SS rod. The power is about the same as the SS10mhs.

Thank you Josh. Are the guides the same on the detachable handle SS rods as they are on the regular SS rods? Since I would like a dual purpose rod, I may go with the blank and have it finished with low riders. Also, will the 10' or 10' 5" rods handle up to 6 oz plus bait if need be? the 8 foot tip section of the 11' foot rods will be more difficult for me to transort.

I think the lowriders are the way to go on a switch rod. You should be able to throw 6 plus bait but it fishes best around 4 while throwing bait.

What is the reason that Lamiglas is having so many problems with the Super Surf Series of Rods and Blanks. I talked to a local builder at a tackle store near me and he hade to send back Super Surf blanks back due to the rods being warped. He has also had a lot of them snapping in the handle areas of the blanks. Now for the most part I really like Lamiglas blanks especially the GSB blanks they are true work horses when it comes to blanks. However I like to see Lamiglas get the the SS blanks to be as good in quality as the GSBs kind of dissapointed as they are suppossed to be high end rods.

The SS rods are much more durable than the GSB blanks. We have seen very little returned with the exception of one model when we first introduced them. We see much less returns of the SS rods per items sold than we do any of our other surf blanks. So I am not really sure what model your builder is talking about. The one Dano is talking about was a prototype. We did have some rods returned with squeaking guides but the problem was fixed and most people that fished with them a few times the squeak went away.
