Pyramid Lake (Nevada)

I'm looking for a new rod that will be primarily be used for jigging while wading. I'm using lures from 1/4oz to 1oz. The water at Pyramid lake is very salty and hard on equipment. My number one concern is being able to cast long distances using a spinning reel.

Pyramid Lake has only one

Pyramid Lake has only one type of fish worth fishing for, Lahontan cutthroat they average 4 to 10 lbs but is not uncommon to hook a 15 lb or larger, and every so often someone takes on a 30 lb to 40 lb fish.

Lahontan cutthroat fight like the dickens the season is open 8 month a year (closed by June and opens back up in late October). The lake has some long shallows 3'-5' followed by a drop off that goes to 400' deep.

The common method is to wade out until you are in 3' of water then climb up and sit on a 4' ladder you carry out with you and make a long cast out over the drop off. With Spinning tackle the lure will be spoons and spinners, and if fly fishing a woolly bugger with a fast sinking tip line. Lahontan cutthroat are ravenous feeders for about an hour and a half two times a day, hunting mostly Zooplankton but will take a small Perch at times.

The rods I use for Lahontan cutthroat are a X96JS, XMG50 EXS96LL, and EC908, it just depends on the weather and how long I want the fight to last which rod I use but the EXS96LL is to light on some of the bugger fish and the X96JS is to heavy for the smaller ones.

I always hose everything used fishing at Pyramid Lake the first chance I get and my rods and reels hold up well.
