A gentleman I knew many years ago built a gripper out of foam pipe insulation for that job, 2 needed, smallest insulation you can find and than you may have to cut some away as the ends can't overlap when you grip it good. Slit the material, cut to fit, twist and pull straight is the action you want to seperate the pieces,
