I am newer to steelhead and salmon fishing, this is my 2nd year. All I have is a ML drifting rod with the Michigan handle which isnt exactly ideal for casting spoons or spinners. It is a Shimano 9' IM6 spinning rod, so it is not very sensitive for me to read rock from bite while side drifting. I did my homework before becoming a member and it seems that your ocean fish are much, much larger than our Lake Michigan fish. My rod worked great for fighting Kings but they average 10-15 lbs and steelhead are 8-12 lbs. I am looking for a good sensitive rod for both species for drifting and casting. What would be some ideal rods?
I was thinking the x96js for both species and maybe a rr86mts for just the fall run Kings.
Also how would the Stealth Si fair against both species?
Thanks!

Also this will be primarily a river rod.

It sounds like the models that you have already picked out will do great for your applications. The stealth will be great for steelhead and maybe coho but just to light for chinook. Hope this helps.
I have an older model G 1307 and have managed just about all the variants of steels and salmon in the lower 48. From light line crystal water on the south shore of Lake Erie to Kings on the Nisqually in Washington. It does great with the bottom feel, but when you hit a big girl and she runs for the rapids, you need some serious drag assistance. The Stealth as noted above wouldnt give you the strength to stop a sow in the center cut. Good Luck on your decision. Remember a bad day fishing is always better than a good day at work!!!! I just wanted to thank you all for the super fast turn around on the fast track warranty rod replacement. You got the rod on a Thursday and i got it via UPS on the following Wednesday. Again, thanks for looking out for us Lami users.
