Vedder has written a few books on float fishing, and photos in those books show him using a casting rod and level wind reel. That's why I ask about the vedder model rods.
I heard Bill Herzog tell a customer it's ok to use a casting rod and reel but it take a lot more weight or a bigger float.

The length and the action are what designate Dave Vedder rods as float rods. As far as which style to use when float fishing it is all a matter of opinion. A lot of us around the shop use spinning reels when float fishing for steelhead and casting reels when it comes to salmon fishing. But in no way is it the only way to go. I would suggest trying both and picking which style you prefer. I hope this helps.
