Need Advice on a bucktail rod for stripers

Hi,

I'm looking to get a new rod for throwing mostly bucktails, swim shads and lead head jigs for stripers. This rod will be used from a boat and also from land (mostly around bridges).

Ideally, I would like it to be 7', able to handle jigs around 1/4 to maybe 1 or 1 1/2 oz. I will most likely be matching it up with a 3000 size reel and 20-30# braid. I was looking into rods by another well known high end rod manufacturer, but they use REC guides on them (which I have heard bad things about). So I would prefer either Alconite, SIC or other similar quality guides.

My last requirement would be that I'd like it to be as light as possible. Under 4 1/2 ounces would be ideal, as I am trying to keep the weight of the whole combo to under 14 ounces total.

Thanks,
Bob

I think you would want to

I think you would want to look at the XPS704. It can throw 1oz. fairly well even though it is not rated for it. it is a very versatile rod.

I see that rod is only rated

I see that rod is only rated up to 1/2 oz. I'm surprised you don't have a rod rated for up to 20 lb. line and something like 3/8 to 1 oz. or 1/2 to 1 1/14. But if you say the XPS704 will handle a 1 oz. lure I will definitely try it out. I'm going to the World Fishing Expo in Suffern, NY next week. Hopefully I can flex one there.

Can you tell me the weight of that rod?

Thanks for your help.

I would look at the Ron Arra

I would look at the Ron Arra series. I own two and use them for throwing bucktails, jerkbaits, and swimbaits and they work great. Not too sure about the exact weight but they are extremely light.

Thanks for that BBF. The

Thanks for that BBF. The specs look right, except I'm looking for a rod around 7'. I have an 8' that I use to throw off the beach and more open areas. This rod will be used mostly from a boat and for fishing (from land) around bridges.
