New Surf Rod

I'm currently in the market for a new surf rod. Had a SK 10MS surf king which after breaking the handle lamiglas was kind enough to ship me a new handle, two weeks after receiving it I stepped in a tire rut and the pole took a nose dive and the tip broke. I'm looking for a rod 10' or larger, the rod would be used for tossing lures and bucktails from 1-4 oz. I will be fishing off rocks and along the south side of Montauk Pt where long treks will be done so weight will be a factor. Also having a custom rod built is still an option any feed back is much appreciated

10 foot Ron Arra! get it over

10 foot Ron Arra! get it over with! Plus if you are walking the two miles down the rocks you will want the two pc. Nevertheless, you guys use big,big plugs down there so the 11 might be your best bet? I fish off the rock in Gloucester MA and use a 10 foot and 9 and when my friend brian doyle came up from long island with that 11 foot people where in awww... best of luck.

Eyefish, if you want a 1

Eyefish, if you want a 1 piece rod, I would suggest you consider either the Super Surf (SSU) or Surf and Jetty (GSB) series of blanks. The Super Surf is definitely the lightest blanks in their surf series and worth the money. If you want a 10' and plan on throwing 1-4, I would only ask what do you plan on doing more, throwing over 3 ounces of throwing less than 2 ounces? 1-4 is a tough range to have one rod do it all and do all of them well. The SSU1201MH is great from 2-4 or 5 ounces if needed and the SSU1201M is great from 1/1.5 - 3 ounces. The GSB1201M is great for 2-4 and the GSB1201L is great from 1.5-3.

The Arra series is a nice series as well, but if you plan on throwing braid or buying one of this series' production rods, I would suggest one of the other series I recommended above. I have built on a lot of Arra blanks for customers and they are a fine blank, but there are better options. The XRA1205 is one of the best pure plugging rods available. I have fished mine for years w/o any issues and used braid. This blank may be too heavy for what you want though as it does not throw under 2 ounces well at all. The XRA1204 may be closer to what you want if you want something in this series.

If you plan on walking a lot, 11' rods are not the best option. They are also difficult in windy conditions. But, they are great when you need to get the line above rocks in the distance while fighting fish.

I fished my SSU1201MH all fall w/ a 250 VS and braid and loved it. I was surprised how much lighter a complete rod was compared to a identically built GSB1201M I built for a customer using the same reel was.

I hope this helps.
