I am looking for to buy a new 2-pc surf rod that I can use with lures (topwater, lipless, jerk, stick baits) of 5/8 - 2 oz . Ideally, the rod would have a fast action, med-heavy power to handle big blues or stipers and would be compatible with braided lines. Casting distance is also one of my top criteria. Which one would you recommend between the following (or any better suggestion?):
- SS 9MS
- XSRA 1083-2
- XSRA 1203-2
Thanks for your help.
Best, Charles

My choice would be the SS 9MS as it is a very versatile rod and you will be using it so many different ways.

Thanks so much Josh! It's greatly appreciated!
chkurzen,
What rod did you get, and how is it working for you?
I'm looking for just about the same thing.
Thanks!
Gatorjwade,
I have a 10' xsra 1203-2 and do a fair amount of surf fishing on long island - both north and south shores. South shore requires an ability for long casts to get out past the breakers and the north shore is a finicky body of water that has you throwing an entire bag so the rod's sensitivity to effectively work everything from heavy tins to lightweight swimmers is essential. The rod excels in both environments - although in the spring on the north shore it is more than I need so contemplating a 8-9' rod. I've had this rod for apx 8 years and only now notice hairline cracks around the guides and have been thinking of sending in for warranty repair just need to know it will qualify.
Other rods I have purchased - penns and daiwa off the rack are just too thick and dull to feel the bait and are also heavy to accommodate weightier lures which wears on you making that thousandth cast of the night. Hope this helps!
Tight lines.
