I'm thinking about ordering an XTC 865 because I think it would be a decent all around travel surf rod. I like that fact that it is in only three pieces. I also tend to like spinning blanks for casting rods, and so maybe I'll like it since I think it was probably first a spinning blank instead of a casting blank. However, it does not have a "surf" handle. Will that make it less versatile in the sudsA? Lastly, anybody know how many guides it has?

As long as you are running a conventional reel on it you should be fine. This blank is a Mod. Fast action. As long as the rod is not being overloaded, it should work out fine for you. I do not know what applications you intend to use the rod for. We have had very little issues with this rod and have sold a fair amount of them. I hope this helps have a great day.

A big fish or strong cast could possibly break the blank in the application you have described. Graphite rods are 'spined' as a result of their manufacturing process and consequently, quality rodbuilders wrap their guides along this spine. Spinning rods are wrapped to bend one way and casting rods the other. The application you described would work against the rods built purpose. If nothing else, performance would be hindered.
Thanks to everyone for the input. C-Radical - the XTC865 is a casting rod with casting guides, but I think the the original blank was first a spinning rod before it was built as a casting rod. Thanks for the reminder about the spine though. Tight lines.
