I'm new to surf fishing and need some advice. I have recently been purchasing a wide variety of Pencil Poppers both wood and plastic models ranging from 1oz to 3.5 oz. I have been reading on some forums that a fiberglass rod is preferred over graphite and vice versa..
I'm looking for the Noreast Striped Bass fisherman who frequent this site for your advice. Also from the Lamiglas factory staff..
Any suggestions on a Lamiglas rod that will handle pencil poppers?
Thank you!

Here in Montauk, NY the "Go To" pencil popper rod is built on the SSB1362M. The soft tip makes the pencil popper dance across the water.
I have been using the XRA1203 (1pc) for poppers under 2.50zs. For the 9-11 inch 2.75oz-3.5oz poppers I have been using the the XRA1204 (1pc). I also have a "go to" SB136 2M . All rods work well, it's a matter of weight. How long can you cast a plug (time wise). The original Montauk pencil popper SB136 2M is 11'4" long and weighs 9ozs. The other two blanks/rods I use weigh 6ozs and 9ozs respectively.
If you are just starting out, and fish the NY bight on north, I suggest you go with the fiberglas SB136 2M. I have four Fuji hardloy guides, the first two (from the stripper guide going to the tip) are the high frame surf spin guides; the next two are hardloy vframe guides to transition the line down to the tip top. The tip top is a Fuji hardloy with a size 16mm ring. A Penn 704 and twenty pound test Ande or Berkley Big Game round out the ensemble. The rod I own was originally built back in 1974. It has been rewrapped several times. It has no reel seat, just a 28" cork tape handle. I still keep it rigged and ready on the rod rack. If you fish from Sandy Hook on south, you can take off 6"-12" for comfort. Stick with the full length if you fish LI on east and north.
The XRA rods I built for myself are a bit pricey if you aren't real sure you are gonna plug fish 80% of the time. But they are worth every penny.
I have not had a chance to try the Lamiglass factory "PP" model rod, but if it's built on the 'L' series of blanks it should also be a worthwile perchase.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jason, What attributes are necessary in a pencil popping rod from Lamiglass' point of view?
