New to the surf casting sport. Pretty sure I have the right reel ( Shimano Stradic 5000FH)10-14lb line. Looking to match it with either a 2 piece or travel rod. Would like to stay under $200. Any impute would be appreciated.

What length would you prefer. Also what type of application are you needing the rod for? How heavy of gear are you running. Let me know and I will get you going. Thank you.

Jason,
Recently moved from the Chicago area to LA. and this is my first foray into surf fishing. Mostly fish for Bass/Bluegill on the fly or ultralite. Not exactly sure what you guys use here. Would like to cast plugs etc. and live bait if necessary. Most of my Bass spinning rods are 6"6' or less. I would say a 7"6' . My reel (Stradic 5000FH)is holding 200yards of 12LB mono. Open to suggestions but prefer at least a 2 piece rod.
Thanks
Alan
Not on the same coast obviously. Down here we use rods 9-11ft for slinging metal and plugs from the Surf. Distance is what you want along with light weight for casting over and over again.
well i myself live on the east coast in new jersey so i cant say surf fishing is the same there as it is here but i cant imagine it being a whole lot different. but here in jersey i myself use anywhere from a 7' up to an 11' rod depending on what im useing and what the surf conditions are. when the surf is calm from alot of hard west winds i use my 7' to throw light plugs ie: a mambo minnow but on average i use an 8 or 9 foot rod for throwing various plugs in average surf conditions but for the heavier wood plugs and metal i tend to use my 10 and 11 foot rods
7ft. 1oz.- 2oz. --small plastics ie: mambo minnows, redfins and small rubber shads and bucktails
8ft. to 9ft. - 1oz. - 4oz.-- small plastics, bombers light metal ie: ava 007 and ava 17, rubber shads small woods plugs and small to medium needlefish
10ft. to 11ft. - 2oz. to 8oz.-- medium to large needlefish, medium to large wood, poppers, heavy metal ie: anything over 2oz. large rubber shads, big needlefish, heavy bucktails.
like i said i live on the east coast so fishing might be a totally different ball game there but what i put in here is the typical gear for here in new jersey. if you have any other questions feel free to ask and i will do my best to answer them.
id rather be fishing
I like using a 11-6 lamiglass with a Penn Squidder reel loaded with 15lb test. You can really launch that baby out to were the big ones eat. if you hook into something really big it has the backbone to get it in. They don't make the Penn Squidder anymore but you can find them on ebay. Good luck fishing on the west coast.
I am looking to purchase the 9' Ron Arra matched with a shimano sustain 5000fe. The fishing I am going to do is on the east coast mostly off a jetty with lures 1-2 oz for stripers and blue fish. What do you thing about the combo and what other combo would you suggest.
