Salmon Creek

OK Jason, I live in the felida area of Vancouver, Wa. Every morning for about an hour, throught the last week, I've fished salmon creek in clark county for steelhead and have been unsucessful. I've talked to alot of fishermen that say there's a good run on the creek none of wich have got anyhthing.Although, today I went up to the trap and talked to some volunteers. They told me they have yet to see one fish and that the creek has a very little to no population. So whats the reel deal?

One thing is for sure, alot

One thing is for sure, alot of enhancement work has been done on the creek as far as resorting holding water, great fly rod water....I have yet to hear anything yet for this year.

It does get a run of Winter

It does get a run of Winter steelhead. As in most small creek's You want to look at most of all water conditions. We have had very little rain since the big rain a few weeks ago. I would bet on the next rain it will get a good push of fish.

To Matthewc. I also flyfish

To Matthewc. I also flyfish however, I spin fish aswell, and this is the first year Im fishing for steelhead here in clark county. So I wanted to try using a baitcaster.I thought my chances may be better considering I have no experience with steelys around here.I enjoy flyfishing more in the summer, cause I have no experiance with it in the winter.Soo let me ask you does salmon creek have a trout population in the summer? I've fished it a couple of times in the summer and have only caught sucker/squaw/whitefish or whatever you call them.I've caught chromers before on the fly but only in eastern Oregon. On the deschutes or metoulious.I have some friends that live in Maupin so the flies I have match the huge summer run red sides. Im sure I can't use the same flies here. Im sure the hatch is completly different. And because of that I chose to try baitcasting.I would think its only nymph fishing in the winter for steely's but I've seen no nymphs on the rocks. Maybe some of the olive/october caddis would be good but like I said I have no idea.So all in all I guess my questions to you are.Is there trout here in the summer, and if so, what fly's work well. And if a flyrod is choice here in the winter what is the hatch or how should I rig. Thanks for any info.

To jcoop:Hey I appreciate the advise Its good knowing that catching a steely is possible.Im gonna spend more time on the water knowing that they're in there. This is my first season using a baitcater,My experience is only with summer trout on the fly and spin.So any advise is welcome.I've been floating berkley worm's on a jig Im gonna try the berkley egg sack aswell.I drive a silver with black racing stripe Durango R/T.I park in the softball field. I Arrive about every morning at 7:30-8:00 My name Is Thad.If you need a fishin buddy I'm there.I'll gladly take any advise.Once again thanks.

To Jason:So that looks like

To Jason:So that looks like this weekend.Let me ask you, do I wait till the rain is over? Will they run and bite the same if it's raining/snowing? I hear it's gonna snow. Will that hender thery're bite. I plan on fishing every day rain shine or snow.Any other advise?

You can catch fish on a

You can catch fish on a rising river. Generally speaking You are better off once the river or creek has crested and is beginning to drop. Of course it does need to be a fishable color. That is for sure when you will find the best success. As far as trout fishing in Salmon creek you are better off fishing there at ClinLine pond for planters. Where you would have a little more excitement and have a chance at some good size Browns, cutthroat Trout and Rainbows is up at Merrill Lake, above Cougar. It is also very beautiful. Hope this helps have a great day.

I may be down there on

I may be down there on Saturday Ill probably be in a blue Tahoe. Stop me if you see me. If it stops raining the creek comes in pretty quick. I have not heard any forecasts so it will depend on that. I would rather fish it high than low. I have had a 3 fish morning on the creek when it only had an 8"-12" visibility.

The problem right now is it

The problem right now is it will be very low, clear and cold the fish do get very slow to react. Once the Snow starts melting as long as it does not go too fast the creek should stay in shape and this should get things going. Good luck.
