I love to troll in the bay area and some of the large reservoirs in Nor Cal. I will be drifting the Smith River for Steelhead this week. I am looking to buy and great overall rod that will accommodate A Calcutta 200 series Reel. I was thinking about an 8’6”, 10-20 lb, ½ to 1/1/2 oz., medium/heavy rod. Is this a correct assumption, if so what would your top three be?

1) EXC 89 MT
2) X 89 MTC
3) G 1310 T
All three of these models will fit the range you are looking for. The G 1310 T is a little more of a moderate action then the other two options the other two are faster actions. All are great as you step up you are getting a little lighter rod and increased sensitivity. You might also consider the EXC 92 M in conventional rods this is my #1 Steelhead and light duty Salmon rods I have. I hope this helps have a great day.
