I'm sort of on a quest for a rod that has a great sporadic acction with the above flatfish. I also fish tassie devils and hot-N-tots. But, the flatfish is what I want to shoot for. My quest started after the last time I went fishing and had one rod that caught over 90 percent of the fish. Didn't matter what lure you used or what side of the boat it was on. It out produced. It was an old rod of my Grandpa's from the 60's or 70's. I need to find something as good or better than that rod for action.
There are 2 differences I noticed about the rods I was using. One was 6" longer than the other, but due to handle, it stuck out 10" further from the prop wash. And the longer rod had more of an arc along the whole rod and the tip seemed to have more movement and action. The other rod seemed to have the arc concentrated at the tip and while there was action, the tip just didn't move around as much. Both rods had Ande 12 lb and I switched the lures etc. around with the fish staying with the rod, not the lure. So, I feel like the rod is the secret and I need to find something that can give this kind of action.

that should be X4, X5, and U20, not 2 X4's.

What are you fishing for? How much weight are you using? How long would you like the rod to be?

If I had to pick one set up that I would want the rod to be targeted for, it would be:
Trolling
Highline (using only 12lb Ande monfiliment and a lure, no weight, no downrigger, no dipsey, no planer board)
Warden's X5 Flatfish would be my target lure
would tend to lean toward an 8'6" or longer rod
The rod needs to be able to give the lure a good sporadic action. I'm convinced that the old rod of my grandpa's has something special to it that gives the lures more action such that it will consistiently canth more fihs.
I would recommend you look at the XCF903. Ignore the line rating as it is a much lighter rod than the rating. Glass rods will work the plug much better than newer graphite rods and that is probably why your Grandpa's works so well.
