I'm looking at a salmon/steelhead rod for Sturgeon primarily in the flats of San Francisco Bay. The requirements I'm looking for are light weight/thin diameter, sensitive tip with some give. Fishing on the anchor in the bay, lots of times the wind will pick up and the boat will rock a lot. It's important that the tip not be too stiff so that it will give and not pull the sinker out of the mud with the rocking action of the boat. The rod can't be mushy either otherwise you won't be able to set the hook. All this while still having back bone and quick load up for hook sets and handling of fish.
The rod should be probably close to 8' and I for sure want one with a graphite handle. Though I've never fished with one I hear they are very sensitive which should help with bite indication and hook set. They look cool, and I want to try one.
I don't want any heavy, thick diameter rod for this application. The lighter the weight the better, I want to have fun with this rod. The Sturgeon we typically catch are up to 60-70inches. It's not uncommon to catch bigger ones but it doesn't happen all the time.
Thanks!
